Computer Knacks: Our PhilosophyBelow are some thoughts on the the principles that help guide us in our product design process, and in our interaction with you, our valued customer. Product DesignDesign goals which resonated with early PC and LAN users remain important today: value, focus and innovation. These goals combine and complement each other to form the core of our product design philosophy. ValueTo perhaps state the obvious, we believe that every product must provide value to you in order to earn its place on your desktop. We strive to earn that place of honor in a combination of three ways: by enabling you to do something that you could not do before, by helping you to save time and effort by making something you are already doing easier, or by helping you to save money by giving you an alternative to subscription-based services. In this age of overly complex, me-too products and services that try to hook you into open-ended subscriptions and additional fees, we hope you will agree that this is a refreshing departure from what has become a norm for the software industry. FocusFocus is what drives us to create products which excel in a well-defined application domain. It helps to counteract the tendency towards complexity and steep learning curves that the unrestrained addition of hodge-podge features results in. With many applications weighing in at 100 or more, mostly unused, megabytes these days, you probably know what we mean. If some potential new feature does not further the clearly-defined function of a product, then it doesn't make the cut. After all, you don't expect your toaster to make coffee, and we're sure it would be an unwieldly monstrosity if it tried. We believe that highly focused products are easier to use and are better at what they do. We hope you agree. InnovationWe have to be honest here. We like what we do. We enjoy writing software. We like trying to get things small and fast ... just to make the statement that it is still possible. Software does not have to be bloatware. Also, we like pushing the envelope in terms of doing things that others are not doing. This is hard work. But we feel deeply that this is the way that true progress is made. Not by filling in property sheets. We have ceded the coding-by-property-sheet market to those whose business it is to sell computers and services by making software ever bigger, slower and more complex. We like trying to help people get more from what they already have. Ok, we're geeks. And we're probably a little out there in terms of our skeptical view of the industry's motives for doing things the way it does. We admit it. Mostly we try and hide the geeky stuff under the hood. The tangible benefits to you are products which are more reliable and are easier to use. Customer ServiceWe strive to continually exceed your expectations. If a product of ours does not do what you expect or would like, we ask that you contact us so that we might have a chance to make things right. We're not perfect, but we're trying! |
