SendLink: Settings Window

The Settings Window is the central place where you may view and modify those settings which affect SendLink's overall operation or configuration.

It is a tabbed dialog box, consisting of two tab pages: the Server Tab and the Registration Tab.

The Settings Window is accessible via the Main Window / File / Settings and Tray Window / Settings commands. It is also invoked automatically if SendLink detects that a previously configured IP address is no longer available.

Server Tab

Server Tab

The Server Tab contains information pertaining to the configuration of the SendLink File Server.

IP Address Field

This field is a list of the IP addresses which have been detected on your computer. If you have more than one entry, be sure to select one which is routable. If there is no routable IP address in this list, it is most likely because your computer is connected to the Internet through a local area network.

Be sure to check the Host Information page for help in filling in this entry. If the IP address reported by the Host Information page does not match any IP address in this list, take a look at our Firewall FAQ and the Host Name Field section for some helpful hints on how to proceed with your configuration.

Port Field

Enter a valid port number as a decimal number.

This value is combined with the IP Address Field to define the service address for the File Server.

If you are connected to a LAN and are using port forwarding on your Internet gateway in order to get inbound connections from remote users to the host that SendLink is running on, this is the port number value that must be specified as both the external and internal port number in the gateway configuration screen.

Host Name Field

The purpose of this field is to allow you to override the IP address portion of the File Server's service address in the links you send to remote users. When specified, SendLink will use the value contained in this field when constructing a remote link. If left empty, the contents of the IP Address Field will be used instead.

The value for this field may be specified in one of two ways: either as an textual host name, or as a numeric IP address using standard dotted-decimal notation. Which form you might reasonably use depends on the circumstances.

There are two basic scenarios for when you might want to use this field to override the IP address in remote links, distinguished by whether the SendLink host has a direct connection to the Internet or an indirect connection.

Direct Internet Connection

If the SendLink host has a connection directly to the Internet, then whether you need to specify a value for the Host Name Field depends on whether you have a dynamic IP address or a static one.

If you have a dynamic IP address — most broadband and all dial-up users have these — then you probably should obtain a host name from a DNS service. You would then enter the host name you get from them here so that the links you send out to people do not become broken when your IP address inevitably changes.

If you have a static IP address, you still have the option of obtaining a host name from a DNS service and entering that name here. And doing so would give you a potential benefit should you change your static IP address down the road. But since this is not something that people with static IP addresses do frequently, you may safely leave this field empty in that case without seriously compromising the stability of your configuration. The most stable SendLink configuration you can put together is one that uses a host name even with a static IP address. But if you are looking to save a step, this is the place you could do it.

If you are not sure whether you have a static or dynamic IP address, assume you have a dynamic one.

Indirect Internet Connection

If the SendLink host has an indirect connection to the Internet, connecting by means of a gateway on your local area network instead of having the Internet adapter directly on that computer, then you need use the Host Name Field to identify your Internet gateway. Doing this ensures that the links you send refer to the routable IP address of your gateway and not the non-routable IP address of your LAN adapter.

What is up for grabs at this point is the manner in which you identify this gateway in the Host Name Field. And that depends on whether it has a dynamic or static IP address.

If your Internet gateway has a dynamic IP address — most broadband and all dial-up users have these — then you probably should obtain a host name for the gateway from a DNS service. You then enter the host name you get from them in the Host Name Field so that the links you send out to people do not become broken when your IP address inevitably changes.

If you have a static IP address, you still have the option of obtaining a host name for the gateway from a DNS service and entering that name here. Doing so gives you a potential benefit should you change your static IP address down the road. But since this is not something that people with static IP addresses do frequently, you may instead supply the raw IP address of the gateway for the value of Host Name Field, as reported by our Host Information page.

If you are not sure whether you have a static or dynamic IP address, assume you have a dynamic one.

The easiest way to configure SendLink when you have an indirect Internet connection is to use the Main Window / Server / AutoConfiguration Command. At the conclusion of this process, you will be prompted to enable the port forwarding feature on your gateway. See our Firewall FAQ for more information on this topic.

Computer Name

The host name that you use with SendLink need not be the same as the computer name specified in the Windows Control Panel. If that name is already registered with a public DNS server, then you may feel free to use it. But, many times, this name is only configured as part of an internal network configuration, and is not therefore available to a remote user in order to find your IP address by means of a DNS lookup.

Automatic Configuration

SendLink will attempt an Automatic Configuration the first time it runs by selecting your first routable IP address and generating a random port number in the dynamic range. The Settings Window will only be shown if this Automatic Configuration process is not successful for some reason.

Registration Tab

Registration Tab

The Registration Tab is where you enter the registration information that is emailed to you when you register your copy of SendLink. When this information entered correctly, SendLink will run in Registered Mode. If you have not registered, or if you have entered the registration information incorrectly, SendLink will operate in Evaluation Mode.

Serial Number Field

This is where you enter your serial number. You might find it more convenient to use the Windows Clipboard to copy this value from the registration email so you don't have to enter it manually.

Product Options Field

This is where you enter any product options associated with your registration. Typically, there will be no product options, thus you will probably just leave this field empty.

Registration Code Field

This is where you enter your registration code. Because of the gobbledygook nature of this code, you will probably find it more convenient to use the Windows Clipboard to copy this value from the registration email.

Commands

Below is an alphabetical list of the commands available from the Settings Window.

Accept Command

Accepts the changes you have made during this editing session, closes the Settings Window, then restarts the SendLink File Server using the new settings.

This command is accessed by clicking on the OK button, or by pressing the Enter key.

Cancel Command

Throws away any changes you have made during this editing session, then closes the Settings Window.

This command is accessed by clicking on the Cancel button, by pressing the Esc key.

Field-Backward Command

Causes SendLink to activate the prior field in the active tab page.

This command is accessed by pressing the Shift-Tab key combination.

Field-Forward Command

Causes SendLink to activate the next field in the active tab page.

This command is accessed by pressing the Tab key.

Page-Backward Command

Causes SendLink to activate the prior tab page in the Settings Window, sequencing between the Server Tab and the Registration Tab.

This command is accessed by pressing the PageUp key or the Shift-Ctrl-Tab key combination.

Page-Forward Command

Causes SendLink to activate the next tab page in the Settings Window, sequencing between the Server Tab and the Registration Tab.

This command is accessed by pressing the PageDn key or the Ctrl-Tab key combination.
